Why Risk Accidents While Towing Your Vehicle When a Weight Distribution Hitch is All You Need?

Adequate weight distribution (WD) is important when hauling a trailer or vehicle. Failure to ensure this can result in towing problems and safety risks, resulting in accidents. A weight distribution hitch can help keep you safe on the road and prevent injuries. It shifts the weight toward the back to the front of the trailer instead of making it rest in the middle of the hitch. This way, it is easier to tow heavy loads.

Understanding Weight Distribution

WD involves the trailer tongue and gross trailer weights. Gross trailer weight (GTW) is the trailer’s total weight, including the cargo. On the other hand, tongue weight (TW) is the weight bearing down on the hitch, including that towards the trailer’s front and behind the rear axle of the towing vehicle. An imbalance of those two factors can result in several issues.

For instance, excessive TW at 10 to 15 per cent of the GTW can make the hitch dive or sink. Meanwhile, insufficient TW can make the hitch rise. Weight difference can also make your trailer sway.

How Does It Work?

As the name implies, the hitch evenly distributes the payload’s weight. It works by applying adjustable spring bars and tension, so the trailer tongue’s load is distributed evenly to the axles.

Sway control can also be added in addition to your weight distribution hitch. Wind and passing cars can cause back-and-forth swaying that can harm the suspension and put you at risk when driving at high speeds. Some hitches have mechanisms to minimise that phenomenon and increase your safety.

Better Than a Standard Hitch

The weight distribution hitch offers more benefits than the traditional version. It ensures even up and down motion and eliminates swaying while improving trailer tow capacity. It allows better control, encourages safer steering and braking, and stabilises your ride to minimise wear.
